New issues
New releases out for the week of 1/28 include titles by the cooperative group ScoLoHoFo (John Scofield/Joe Lovano/Dave Holland/Al Foster) and by Stefano di Battista and on Blue Note.
There's a new batch of titles from the modern Bop oriented Criss Cross label, with titles by Conrad Herwig, Mike DiRubbo, Jeremy Pelt, Edward Simon and Joel Weiskopf.
Also out are titles by Fred Hersch on Palmetto; David Murray on Justin Time; and Benny Green/Russell Malone on Telarc.
Young violinist Christian Howes has a new trio record on Khaeon with a pianist and bassist that combines his intense playing with a chamber music feeling.
Other new releases include titles by Michael Jefry Stevens on Drimala; Abdullah Ibrahim on Enja; Adrian Legg on Favored Nations; Jay Patten on Flamingo; Peter Kowald on Locust; Flora Purim on Narada; and Chris Cutler on ReR.
Also out are DVDs by Natalie Cole on Hip-O and Martin Taylor on Vestapol.
Reissues & vintage issues
Reissues & vintage issues this week include the next set of Blue Note reissues remastered by engineer Rudy Van Gelder, with titles by Donald Byrd, Lou Donaldson, Clifford Jordan/John Gillmore, Freddie Hubbard, Jackie McLean and Horace Silver.
The most interesting development in the reissue arena may be the start of Mosaic Select, a new imprint from Mosaic Records. The Select series will consist of three or four-CD sets packaged in CD-sized cases (rather than the LP-sized boxes of the regular sets). The smaller size will allow them to issue material that wouldn't fit their definition of Mosaic "complete" sets. Some sets will have unissued material and may include sideman dates. The first two sets are from Carmell Jones and Grachan Moncur III. (Read the JAZZMATAZZ review of the Moncur set.
There are some DVDs out of Jazz Casual titles by John Coltrane, Dave Brubeck and B.B. King from Rhino and of concert appearances by Gary Burton and Ahmad Jamal on MVD.
Concord Jazz celebrates their 30th anniversary by reissuing a two-fer of their first two releases from 1973 by Herb Ellis/Joe Pass/Ray Brown/Jake Hanna. They also have two-fers from Monty Alexander/Ray Brown/Herb Ellis and Tal Farlow .
Also out is the first CD issue on Rhino of a 1982 jazz session on Elektra fronted by singer Chaka Khan.
Plus: volume four in Origin Jazz's comprehensive sets of Bix Beiderbecke and reissues by Stacey Kent on Candid; Liz Callaway on Varese; and Frank Newton on Jasmine.
Last, but not least, Audio Fidelity has a great-sounding dual-layer SACD of 1959 trio recordings by pianist Sonny Clark.
