Capsule Reviews
Soweto Kinch -
Conversations With The Unseen (Dune Records) Sept 7
Dune Records is a British label started by bassist Gary Crosby to provide an outlet for black British jazz.
The label has just begun U.S. distribution, starting with
Conversations With The Unseen,
an excellent album of post-bop acoustic jazz by alto saxophonist
Soweto Kinch, who has some intense, intricate playing together with his quartet of guitarist Fesi Temowo, bassist Michael Olatuja and drummer Troy Miller. And on the intro piece, as well as on "Intermission - Split Decision" and two end tunes, Kinch raps swingingly over music that shifts between hip-hop beats and jazz.
A strong debut!
— ALAN LANKIN
Jazz Jamaica All Stars -
Massive (Dune Records) Sept 7
The Jazz Jamaica All Stars (JJAS) is a Gary Crosby group that plays "skazz,"
with a jazz frontline playing over a ska rhythm section. Their
repertoire mixes modern jazz tunes and Jamaican pop songs. It's an interesting effort, although the rhythm section
gets a bit repetitious.
— ALAN LANKIN

Paul McCandless/Art Lande Quartet -
Shapeshifter (Synergy Music) Sept 7
Shapeshifter
is a fine quartet session that's reminiscent of the jazzier side of
Paul McCandless's group Oregon. McCandless has a beautiful tone on his multiple reeds and
Art Lande's playing is romantic without being overly lush. There are some memorable tunes and fine interplay between all four musicians.
— ALAN LANKIN
Personnel: Paul McCandless (bass clarinet, oboe, English horn, soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone);
Art Lande (piano); Peter Barshay (double bass); Alan Hall (drums)
Boy-Girl Band -
Drop Your Leotards! (Synergy Music) Sept 7
Best known as a pianist (see above), Art Lande plays drums on this set of his
compositions performed with a trio of Colorado musicians that he's been
improvising with over the last two years -
Jayn Pettingill (sax),
Doug Anderson (bass) and
Emily Takahashi (piano). They perform a series of short
improvs that start quietly, with a lot of space, and builds
up a bit of steam; in between are a couple of strange spoken work interludes.
— ALAN LANKIN

Patricia Barber -
Live: A Fortnight In France (Blue Note) Sept 7
Live: A Fortnight In France
is a new album by singer/pianist
Patricia Barber. Recorded live at several French venues, it includes a mixture of originals (old and new)
and standards. (One of the pieces is based on Ovid's "Metamorphoses." She's backed by a fine, swinging trio and sings her sometimes quirky lyrics with a husky half-spoken, half-sung voice.
— ALAN LANKIN
Personnel: Patricia Barber (vocals, piano); Neal Alger (guitar); Michael Arnopol (bass guitar); Eric Montzka (drums);
