Charlie Hunter Trio -
Friends Seen & Unseen (Ropeadope) July 13, 2004
Charlie Hunter & Bobby Previte's Groundtruther -
Latitude (Thirsty Ear) Aug 24, 2004
On Charlie Hunter's new CD,
Friends Seen & Unseen (Ropeadope), the 8-string guitarist returns to the trio format of his first recording. While the smaller ensemble
allows more space for his melodic improvisational groove, at times the group seems larger than a trio since
John Ellis switches between flute, bass clarinet and tenor saxophone and Hunter uses the extra low strings
of his instrument to play bass lines, while simultaneously playing rhythm and lead guitar on the upper strings.
Most of the pieces feature
Hunter's guitar and some soulful sax improvising off short melodies on top of Derrek Phillips's funky drumming.
The Groundtruther project is a more experimental setting for Hunter. Co-led by drummer
Bobby Previte, Latitude is the first of three CDs planned by the group; each will feature a
different third musician; this time the guest is saxophonist guest Greg Osby. The pieces on
Latitude are involved in sonic exploration; Hunter and Previte employ electronic effects, processed sound blips and drones while Osby represents the human voice, using short melodic elements to improvise within the stream of sounds.

Madeleine Peyroux -
Careless Love (Rounder) Sept 14
Eight years after her first album,
Dreamland, vocalist
Madeleine Peyroux has just released her second one, called
Careless Love. The album includes jazz standards, pop tunes by Leonard Cohen, Elliot Smith and Hank Williams and an original. Peyroux's voice's eerily similarity to Billie Holiday's and her mixture of older and new tunes give the album a curious mix of past and present. The album has some nice, jazzy playing underneath. Highlights include the title tune by W.C. Handy and a slow, haunting rendition Bob Dylan's "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go."
— ALAN LANKIN
Madeline Peyroux (vocals, acoustic guitar); Dean Parks (guitar); Lee Thornburg (trumpet); Larry Goldings (piano, celesta, Wurlitzer piano, Hammond b-3 organ); David Piltch (bass); Jay Bellerose (drums, percussion); Scott Amendola (percussion)
