Jazzmatazz Newsletter
#200
Newsletter #200!
I had wanted to celebrate reaching the milestone of our 200th newsletter
with contests, prizes, press releases, public announcements, and such, but needed the time to keep the site going instead.
So instead, here's our usual low key presentation...
However, I did want to stop and thanks to our readers and subscribers for supporting the site over
the last six years. Thanks for sending us news and visiting our sponsors! And thanks to those who've told their jazz friends about the site
and added links to Jazzmatazz from their sites.
Finally, thanks to the record companies, PR people and musicians who send us information and CDs to list and review!

Matthias Lupri -
Transition Sonic (Summit Records
) Sept 7, 2004
Matthias Lupri
is a young, talented vibes player and composer who has recorded an interesting sextet session on
Transition Sonic.
I like the sound of the group—the atmosphere and choice of instruments on a few of the pieces remind me of some of Gary Burton’s 1970s ECM recordings. (Lupri studied with Burton, but has a more percussive sound on the vibes.)
Lupri's compositions and arrangements are also interesting—I like how he's disbursed the solos throughout the album, giving the album greater variety and unity. Two of the highlights are "3" and "Double Trouble," which have some more aggressive playing. The churning drums, use of counterpoint and the changing setting under the soloist also remind me a bit of the Dave Holland Quintet.
— ALAN LANKIN
Matthias Lupri Group:
Cuong Vu (trumpet, electronics); Mark Turner (soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone); Matthias Lupri (vibraphone, electronics); Nate Radley (guitar, electronics); Thomson Kneeland (double bass, electronics); Jordan Perlson (drums)
