Various Artists -
One More: Music of Thad Jones (IPO Recordings) Mar 1
Trumpet player and composer Thad Jones was the co-leader of the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra, which played Monday nights at the Village Vanguard during 1966-79. Jones's compositions featured good melodies and exquisite backgrounds and settings for the soloists.
IPO records had Michael Patterson arrange eleven of Jones's composition for a medium-sized group of master musicians who all had connections with Thad. There's beautiful soloing and ensemble work from the all star cast.
Personnel:
Frank Wess (flute, alto sax & tenor sax); James Moody (soprano & tenor sax); Benny Golson (tenor sax); Jimmy Owens (trumpet, flugelhorn); Bob Brookmeyer (trombone); Hank Jones, Sir Roland Hanna (piano); Richard Davis (double bass); Mickey Roker (drums);
the album has liner notes by Ira Gitler
Alfonso Pais -
Terranova (Clean Feed 032) Mar
Portegese guitarist Pais has studied in NYC and now divides his time between Portugal and the US. His new release features set of memorable original jazz compositions and good support and interaction from his bass and drum players. I like his strong, jazzy tone.
Personnel:
Alfonso Pais (guitar), Carlos Barretto (bass), Alexandre Frazao (drums)
