Capsule Reviews
10 May 2005 Releases

Billy Bang - Vietnam: Reflections (Justin Time Records 212) May 10

buy: Vietnam: Reflections Violinist and Vietnam War veteran Billy Bang's excellent 2001 album, Vietnam: The Aftermath, dealt with the trauma of the Vietnam war and the memories of its veterans.

He has now recorded a stunning sequel, called Vietnam: Reflections. The new album is based on the change in Vietnam's and America's relationship over the last 30 years and Bang's personal reflections.

In addition to Bang, the album includes four other Vietnam vets: trumpeter Ted Daniel, drummer Michael Carvin, percussionist Ron Brown and conductor/cornetist Butch Morris. They're joined by pianist John Hicks and bassist Curtis Lundy. All but Daniel were on the previous album.

The main difference from the previous album is the inclusion of four traditional Vietnamese musicians and the performance of three traditional Vietnamese songs. The inclusion of vocalist Co Boi Nguyen and dan tranh (a traditional finger-plucked dulcimer) player Nhan Thanh Ngo help give the album a sense of timelessness.

The music on the album has many layers, both musically and emotionally. Multiple themes are sometimes played simultaneously by different musicians and Bangs' jazzy compositions also have a feeling of Eastern modes and melodies. Some of his tunes are quite haunting. Bangs has intense solos on "Lock and Load" and "Reconciliation."

The music has sense of healing and reconciliation, of still remembering the past while striving to go beyond it. (Notice Carvin's drum solo near the end of the last piece, "Reconciliation Two," where he tellingly plays some martial drum patterns.) This extraordinary album is one of the year's best.    ALAN LANKIN

     Track Listing: 1. Reflections (Bang) 11:49 / 2. Ru Con (Traditional) 3:23 / 3. Lock & Load (Bang) 12:36 / 4. Ly Ngua O (Traditional) 2:20 / 5. Doi Moi (Bang) 9:21 / 6. Reconciliation (Bang) 8:23 / 7. Waltz of the Water Puppets (Bang) 6:48 / 8. Throng Com (Traditional) 2:29 / 9. Reconciliation Two (Bang) 12:52

Personnel: Billy Bang (violin); Co Boi Nguyen (vocals); Nhan Thanh Ngo (zither); Ted Daniel (trumpet); Butch Morris (cornet, conductor); John Hicks (piano); Curtis Lundy (bass); Michael Carvin (drums); Ron Brown (percussion) plus Henry Threadgill (flute) on one track and James Spaulding (flute, alto saxophone) on three

Paul Grabowsky - Tales Of Time And Space (Sanctuary) May 10 hear sound samples

hear/buy: Tales Of Time And Space Pianist and composter Paul Grabowsky has a broad musical experience. Born in Papua New Guinea, he grew up in Melbourne, Australia. From 1980-85, when he was in his early twenties, he lived in Europe, performing jazz with European and visiting American musicians. When he moved back to Australia in 1986, he wrote music for movies and TV, continued to play jazz and did some work with Indian and Eastern musicians.

Grabowsky came to New York to record Tales Of Time And Space with a talented set of American jazz players. Grabowsky plays piano well, but the emphasis on this recording is on his compositions & arrangements and the other players. The pieces have interestingly complex rhythms and forms with some fine sax solos from Branford Marsalis and Joe Lovano, as well as inspired drumming from Jeff "Tain" Watts.    ALAN LANKIN

The booklet includes notes and beautiful photographs of the musicians and the NYC landscape by Jeff Wassmann.

     Track Listing: 1. Tailfin 9:28 / 2. Sideshow Sarabande 8:50 / 3. Silverland 5:13 / 4. Angel 6:58 / 5. Medium Rare 9:48 / 6. Wist 8:29 / 7. Reason and Rhyme 6:52 / 8. Updraft 6:49 / 9. Circle of Trust 7:03 / 10. Silverland 5:04 (all by Grabowsky)

Personnel: Paul Grabowsky (piano); Branford Marsalis (soprano sax); Joe Lovano (tenor sax); Scott Tinkler (trumpet); Ed Schuller (double bass); Jeff "Tain" Watts (drums)

Fred Lonberg-Holm Trio - Other Valentines (Atavistic Records 165) May 10 hear sound samples

hear/buy: Other Valentines Cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm has performed a wide range of music, including avant garde jazz, experimental rock and modern classical. Born in Delaware, he spent part of his youth in Sweden, then settled in New York and eventually in Chicago. In New York, he had worked with John Zorn, Anthony Braxton and Anthony Coleman. Since relocating to Chicago in the late 1990s, he's performed and recorded with Ken Vandermark, Jim O'Rourke, Kevin Drumm, Peter Brotzmann, Michael Zerang and many others (and has recently be a member of the Vandermark 5).

Lonberg-Holm's 2002 Atavistic release, A Valentine for Fred Katz, was a tribute to cellist Fred Katz, who was a member of Chico Hamilton's late 1950s chamber jazz quintet. Six of the eleven pieces on that album were by Katz.

Other Valentines is a sequel of sorts, with a broader source of material. There's one piece by Katz, along with two originals by Lonberg-Holm and one by bassist Jason Roebke, as well as covers of tunes by Sun Ra, Syd Barrett (Pink Floyd), Jeff Tweedy (Wilco), Gil Scott-Heron and Chan Marshall (Cat Power).

The result is a melodic and lyrical, gently swinging, straight ahead session of jazz improvisation with some radical source material. The arrangements and instrumentations give it a chamber music feel grounded in the low sounds of the cello and bass. A lovely album.    ALAN LANKIN

     Track Listing: 1. East of Uz (Sun Ra) 7:08 / 2. Fool (Marshall) 8:38 / 3. Arnold Layne (Barrett) 4:59 / 4. Almost Mid-Day (Lonberg-Holm) 5:14 / 5. Vals På Vingar (Malmberg) 6:10 / 6. Flo (Lonberg-Holm) 7:42 / 7. Winter in America (Scott-Heron) 6:23 / 8. Jesus etc (Bennett, Tweedy) 4:14 / 9. I Got Nothing (Roebke) 6:30 / 10. To My Buddy, Buddy (Katz) 9:14

Personnel: Fred Lonberg-Holm (cello); Jason Roebke (bass); and Frank Rosaly (drums)

Simone Kopmajer - Romance (Zoho Music 200505) May 10 hear sound samples

hear/buy: Romance Talented young vocalist Simone Kopmajer grew in in a family of Austrian musicians. She studied with singers Mark Murphy and Sheila Jordan in Austria and made her US debut in 2000.

Kopmajer has a sweet voice, but her interpretations have a maturity the belies her age (she's in her early 20s). On her new album of standards, Romance, Kopmajer has programmed a well selected set of songs of love and romance.

The album has excellent playing from the set of veteran sidemen and beautiful arrangements by pianist John Di Martino. It was produced by Todd Barkan and has liner notes by writer Will Friedwald.    ALAN LANKIN

Track Listing: 1. How Do You Keep the Music Playing? (Bergman, Bergman, Legrand) 3:39 / 2. A Blossom Fell (Barnes, Cornelius, John) 3:59 / 3. We Kiss in a Shadow (Hammerstein, Rodgers) 4:06 / 4. Calling You (Telson) 5:27 / 5. Whatever Happens (Withers) 5:45 / 6. Exactly Like You (Fields, McHugh) 5:45 / 7. Someone to Light Up My Life (Jobim, Lees) 5:23 / 8. The Way You Look Tonight (Fields, Kern) 4:25 / 9. A Time for Love (Mandel, Webster) 5:38 / 10. Where or When (Hart, Rodgers) 5:18 / 11. Just Squeeze Me (But Don't Tease Me) (Ellington, Gaines) 4:51 / 12. Whatever Happens (Reprise) (Withers) 2:58

Personnel: Simone Kopmajer, vocals; John Di Martino, piano; George Mraz, bass; Tim Horner, drums and Eric Alexander, tenor sax

The Frank & Joe Show - 66 2/3 (Hyena Records 9334) May 10 hear sound samples

hear/buy: 66 2/3 Guitarist Frank Vignola and percussionist Joe Ascione originally got together in 2003 to record an album of gypsy swing type music. It quickly evolved to also include standards, originals, Latin, and classical tunes. They named it "The Frank & Joe Show" and added a band for touring.

That first album, 33 1/3, was recorded almost entirely by Vignola and Ascione, but their new release 66 2/3, was recorded by their working group. (Two pieces have guest vocalists: there's a dip in mood with Jane Monheit's "Manhattan," but Janis Siegel has a fun rendition of "Glow Worm.")

The new album is fun mixture of swing, standards and American roots. Despite playing elements of older styles, their verve and sense of humor gives the album a contemporary feel.    ALAN LANKIN

Track Listing: 1. It Might as Well Be Spring (Hammerstein, Rodgers) 4:13 / 2. My Prayer (Boulanger, Kennedy) 3:25 / 3. Manhattan (Hart, Rodgers) 3:20 / 4. Quizas (Farres) 3:48 / 5. Sway (Gimbel, Ruiz) 3:54 / 6. Hungarian Dance, No. 5 (Brahms) 3:41 / 7. After Hours (Asione, Vignola) 4:13 / 8. Let It Happen (Ascione) 4:04 / 9. City Samba (Asione, Vignola) 3:40 / 10. Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans (Alter, Delange) 1:55 / 11. Bach Partita, No. 2 for Solo Violin/Mozart Jam (Allemande Section) 4:33 / 12. That's All [live] (Brandt, Haymes) 3:57 / 13. Glow Worm (Lincke, Mercer, Robinson) 5:37 / 14. [hidden track] 4:52

Personnel: Frank Vignola, Ken Smith (guitar); Gary Mazzaroppi (bass); Joe Ascione, Chuck Ferruggia, Rick Zukor (percussion); Jane Monheit and Janis Siegel each guest on one tune

Rosario Giuliani - More Than Ever (Dreyfus Music) May 10 hear sound samples

hear/buy: More Than Ever Italian saxophonist Rosario Giuliani's new release More Than Ever, was recorded in France with his trio, which was augmented on most tracks by either Paris-born pianist Jean-Michel Pilc or French accordian player Richard Galliano.

The tunes and playing on the album seem to alternate between an American bop styling (on the tracks with pianist Jean-Michel Pilc [who now lives in New York, by the way]) and a European orientation (on those tracks with accordianist Richard Galliano).

My favorate piece is the one track with all five musicians, Galliano's "I Remember Astor," which has an elegiac feel, mixing the sounds of jazz, tango, and Paris.    ALAN LANKIN

     Track Listing: 1. More Than Ever (Giuliani) 5:43 / 2. Seven Thoughts (Giuliani) 4:49 / 3. Dream House (Giuliani) 6:21 / 4. I Remember Astor (Galliano) 5:36 / 5. J.F. (Galliano) 5:59 / 6. Mr.R.G. (Pilc) 4:24 / 7. Suite et Poursuite I, II, III (Giuliani) 9:18 / 8. Monsieur Martin (Giuliani) 4:47 / 9. London by Night (Giuliani) 3:44 / 10. Bianco E Nero (Giuliani) 5:26

Personnel: Rosario Giuliani (soprano & alto sax), Remi Vignolo (bass), Benjamin Henocq (drums) plus Richard Galliano (accordion [3,4,5,10]) and Jean-Michel Pilc (piano [1,2,4,6,8])

James Finn Trio - Plaza de Toros (Clean Feed 034) May 12

buy: Plaza de Toros The talented tenor saxopohone player James Finn recorded his first album as a leader in 2003 after years spent travelling, performing R&B, blues, jazz and classical music, studying meditation, working for a prison substance abuse program and teaching high school and college orchestras and private piano students.

He recorded (and produced and engineered) his third recording, Plaza de Toros, in his own NY studio. Ostensibly the story of a bullfight, the playing is pretty free, but with some melodic themes. Finn's tenor sax playing has a fascinating flow, employing elements of Coltrane's harmonic sense, Sonny Rollins's use of rhythm, and Ayler's emotional intensity. Bassist Dominic Duval's playing is engaging, whether he's plucking or bowing the bass and drummer Warren Smith gives continuous percussive commentary. This is an excellent recording and I'm looking forward to his next release.    ALAN LANKIN

     Track Listing: 1. Toreo de Capa 4:30 / 2. Plaza de Toros 6:31 / 3. The Phantom Bull of Seville 8:32 / 4. El Tercio de Varas 9:20 / 5. Eyes of Angelina 3:52 / 6. El Tercio de Vanderillas 7:55 / 7. El Tercio de Muleta 7:12 / 8. La Estocada 8:11 / 9. Toro Bravo 7:56

Personnel: James Finn (tenor saxophone), Dominic Duval (double bass), Warren Smith (drums)

Jumala Quintet - Turtle Crossing (Clean Feed 038) May 12

buy: Turtle Crossing The Jumala Quintet is a group organized by the free jazz diehard, saxophonist Paul Flaherty. He invited two compatible musicians to share the front line—saxophonist/trumpet player Joe McPhee and trombonist Steve Swell. The group had not performed together prior to this unrehearsed free improvisation recording. The music is intense, but it isn't just a free jazz blowout—the musicians play with sensitivity and a range of dynamics and combinations.

(The album was recorded in 2000, but only managed to be released now. (It was released at turtle speed, perhaps?) It includes liner notes by Steven Loewy and Flaherty. Flaherty has also had recent recent releases on the Cadence Jazz and Family Vineyard labels.)

     Track Listing: 1. The Gift of Nowhere 11:37 / 2. Turtle Crossing 19:23 / 3. Unspoken Oath 8:47 / 4. Weighing of the Heart 11:27 / 5. Borrowed Light 9:02 / 6. All Is Always Now 12:47

Personnel: Paul Flaherty (alto and tenor sax), Joe McPhee (tenor and soprano sax, pocket trumpet), Steve Swell (trombone), John Voigt (double bass), Laurence Cook (drums)
