The story of
Philadelphia born bassist
Henry Grimes
is astonishing
—
from the mid-1950s through the mid-1960s he played and recorded with some of the
best jazz musicians on the scene, including
—
Albert Ayler, Don Cherry, Benny Goodman, Coleman Hawkins, Roy Haynes, Lee Konitz, Steve Lacy,
Gerry Mulligan, Sunny Murray, Perry Robinson, Sonny Rollins,
Roswell Rudd, Pharoah Sanders, Archie Shepp, Cecil Taylor, and many more.
But in 1967, he dropped out of the music scene. His transition out of music was so total, that he wasn't heard from for over thirty years and was presumed dead. In 2002 he was discovered in Los Angeles, where he'd been living for the last twenty years. Bassist William Parker learned that Grimes wanted to begin playing bass again and helped him obtain an instrument. Grimes then started playing in public again and appeared in New York's Vision Festival.
Tonight, Grimes and Parker will be playing bass duets in memory of
Malachi Favors Maghostut, who was the bassist
for the Art Ensemble of Chicago for over thirty years and passed away on January 30th
at the age of 76.

He has an extensive discography [read the

and has a new CD, Tales Out of Time (Hatology), that marks his first small-group recording with Joe McPhee.
It's an excellent session that's more melodic and boppish than most of his efforts.

Kurt Elling
There are hordes of young pop music singers around today, but
Kurt Elling
is one of a rare breed of young jazz singers.
Since his debut album was released in 1995, Elling
has recorded six ambitious albums for the Blue Note label.
On his newest release, Man in the Air, Elling doesn't bring out the same old standards or use newer pop tunes ill-fitted to jazz improvisation. Instead, he has taken on the challenge of vocalese, which is the practice of writing lyrics to an existing instrumental jazz tune. He's taken tunes by Joe Zawinul, Herbie Hancock and others and created some complex and multi-faceted lyrics to go with them.
I'm impressed by his fluidity and control on the opening track, "Minuano," based on a romantic melody by Pat Metheny. The most ambitious piece on the album is a version of John Coltrane's "Resolution" from A Love Supreme, which emphases the song's spirituality. (It's no coincidence that Elling was a former divinity school student.)
The album features good instrumental backing throughout, with long-time musical partner Laurence Hobgood on piano,
Jim Gailloreto or Brad Wheeler on soprano sax, vibist Stefon Harris and a crisp rhythm section.
Elling's singing can range from the straight ahead to the pyrotechnical.

The trio brings their in-the-moment improvisations on jazz standards
back to Philadelphia for their 20th Anniversary Tour. (I'm
confident that the piano ghosts will be kinder this year.)

returns to his home town for two nights.
From the original generation of soul-jazz organ combos, his playing has a bluesy
edge, which you can hear on his most recent CD:

It stayed true to its Latin jazz core, even as it included guests such as Ray Charles and

Hard bop saxophonist Eric Aleaxander's most recent release is the excellent
Nightlife in Tokyo
(Milestone
),
on which he's joined by veterans Harold Mabern on piano and Ron Carter on bass.
Alexander's playing on the album shows the influence on his playing of John Coltrane and
Joe Henderson. His playing is harmonically and melodically imaginative and displays his exuberance and love of playing.
